MK-2 really shines in 2-player VS mode , , presuming both players are well skilled on at least 3 of the fighters apiece 😋 arcade or home versions , , me and my bud named Phil were,/are skilled on majority of the "Kombatants" , we had crazy match my Liu Kang VS his Raiden ,by the second round action and counter-action got so speedy an fierce we glitched out SNES cart we were playing , , ,later that week we played my Sega Saturn vers of MK-2 , it does have load times between match-ups , but during the fights it was speedy as hell and NEVER had a problem ( unless a jerk picks Shang Tsung ) , , ,we were also very adept ( skilled yo ) at the Saturn vers of ""Mortal Kombat Trilogy"" , and played the living crap out of that , , , between our grudge matches in ""SF-Alpha2 gold"", Cammy says "Lock on , destroy trucker", , , ,in new MK games I wish you could turn off the "X-ray moves" or what they renamed "Fatal-blows" , that TOGGLE option should've been included , , ,😸👍👍

While MK2 was amazing at the time, as far as a well rounded fighter, it fell behind Street Fighter which felt more natural to play and the ai wasn't as brutal or unfair(and didn't feel unfair).

I can still win in a single credit. The trick is after round 3, no more uppercut until you get the enemy in the air, then punish with uppercut. Let them walk toward you, but at about 3/4 of the way to sweep range from your character, jump backwards. Computer should stop, and jump I to a free uppercut. Immediately jump in for Jump Kick followed by sweep, jump back again. If they repeat it, start over, if they keep walking, let them get close enough to trigger the stall again, they will repeat this till dead in most cases. Using Kung Lao was a major part too, I could do several things to win easily, like lead jump kick back into dive kick, or Jump kick and air throw.

Grandpa moment here. I was a kid when this came out and it changed my world. I made a lot of friends playing this game and we are still friends today. They would leak fatalities and finishing moves online very slowly so a new fatality was a pretty big deal if you were the first one to do it. The gaming community was far less toxic without the benefit of hiding behind a screen. If you talked shit you would have to back it up haha.
One friend figured out that if you play on player 2 side, there's a game breaking exploit that makes the game very easy to complete with any character. You simply jump toward the enemy and they'll slowly walk backward. If you maintain a distance you can walk them in the corner and the computer will just sit there. At that point, when you jump toward the enemy, the ai will fire a projectile since every character has one. You're rewarded with a devastating corner combo with no damage scaling, so about 80% combos. Otherwise the cheap ass computer will input read everything you do after the third character, Midway was notorious for basically stealing your money at a certain point so this exploit spread through arcades like wildfire. For whatever reason it wasn't ever patched out. Whenever I see this game, I only play on the second side for this reason and it actually makes the game far more enjoyable.
Anyway, cool videos, glad to see old MK getting some love. They really are still fun today especially against other people. Keep up the great videos man.

There was this adult guy playing it who clearly knew all the moves and fatalities/friendships etc and we were , like you said, completely blown away. I had played MK1 and this was just better in everyway.
In 1994 we weren't desensitized to video game fatalities like we got by the late 90s. It was all we could talk about on the bus ride back. All these awesome moves and fatalities. Something missing from video games today is back then, the arcade games almost always were miles ahead of console games and served as like a mythical brief look into the future. This is my favorite MK game, easily. And yes, it is destroy-your-balls levels of hard.
One thing I find interesting about MK2 is that it even _looks_ different compared to both MK1 and MK 3/UMK. The mocapped sprites are cleaner. The character select screen is very high-def. It has a totally different feel and energy to it. It feels like a very real world with real, unique and interesting characters. Not even the new games compare.
When this game came out, along with the _Malibu_ comic books attached to the series (and the movie!) it was legitimately insane. I can still smell the arcade _and_ the comic books. It's wild.
Edit: I seem to remember that to get Liu Kang's bicycle kick more often, just buffer it during other moves. Basically, do Flying Kick or Fireball but hold LK right after you finish the input for any other move. This also works with normals, so when Liu is done with one animation (like a sweep or whatever), you can just let the button go and it'll fire off instead of trying it raw.

Thing with MK1 and especially MK2 is that it was originally released as arcade, and it was meant yo eat up your coins. So first two or three matches will be normal, but after that AI will start to cheat, because players will continue as they are "half-way there". AI reads your inputs and react accordingly, and has it's own set of rules, such as being able to throw you while blocking, break out of combos or spam special moves unlike player who has built-in timer for animation. This is most obvious with projectile moves like Mileena's sia toss or Liu Kang's fireball, AI will spam them and not have to wait for animation to finish before throwing another one.
Also in MK3 for example, in console version you could always easily beat Motaro by just either jump kicking him or just standing right next to him and doing high punch, however on console version he has that stupid unblockable grab which takes like 1/4 of your HP.

Sometimes, after I got my ass handed in another fighting game, I turn on MK2 only for relaxation 😂 - gimme Johnny Cage, Jax, Baraka or one of the three ninjas any day for a 1CC run, they're the best choice to give the AI a taste of his own medicine - and Kung Lao, Liu Kang and the girls are top against human opponents👌🏼- nice video, and of course I subscribed!

In fact, I'm pretty sure the time doesn't even matter. I have vague memories of discovering the kick is bugged to where the duration doesn't matter. I still remember the first time I saw the game. My friend told me Wagon Wheel Bowling in Oxnard (no longer in existence) had it. We road our bikes over there and sure enough, there it was... I always played as Raiden (my favorite from the first game), but in order to beat it, I always had to switch to Sub-Zero towards the end. Cheesing with repeatedly freezing was pretty much how I first beat it.

The best playground myth from MK2 that I remember was kids saying they knocked someone into the mouth of a tree in the dead woods for a stage fatality. Obviously it wasn't true, but that very "stage fatality" came back full circle in MK9 as one..man life is weird..

Well it technically had it's first appearance in MK: Shaolin Monks. You could upper/throw enemies to the tress and the trees would eat them in the Living Forest stage. Heck it's even a game over screen where a tree eats the player if you lose all your health in that stage.

I still remember the first time I ever saw MK. Me and my cousin were at the mall with our moms, they were shopping and let us go to the arcade. When we walked in there was a HUGE crowd of kids around this one machine, when we got close enough to see what it was the first thing that hit us were the graphics. It looked REAL. And I'm not talking slightly more detail, to our eyes that were used to looking at animated cartoon looking graphics, MK looked like real people on the screen. Then we started noticing all of the blood and finally we saw a fatality. We couldn't believe what we were watching. The most realistic looking game we'd ever seen and it was also the most gruesome game we'd ever seen. It was wild. I was 13 when the first MK came out. And each game got better, more realistic looking and more gruesome. But that memory of the first time I ever witnessed MK1 in person will always stick with me.

I saw a video by a guy who hacked the code of this game. The AI is programmed to track your joystick movements and react with a preset counter based on that movement. It's not cheating per say, it's just reacting milliseconds faster than any human could. But once you figure out the pattern the AI is using, you simply exploit it. Keeping in mind the AI plays totally different and exponentially harder on the player 2 side. Jumping at the CPU on that side is a death sentence.

Comment for the algo- I used to play this in the arcade and on a good day I might get about four fights in. Years later I learned what the problem is (besides the overpowered throw command). Apparently unlike Street Fighter 2, where characters had some kind of pre-programmed pattern and responses they would use, in MKII the AI just knows your inputs and has a counter to all of them. So if you do something, it's likely going to do exactly what it needs to counter or avoid your move. The only way you really get good against the CPU is finding ways to cheese out the system.
Anyway, great video and while you may not have got the arcade experience, at least you didn't lose a ton of quarters to it.

I beat the actual game on a legit arcade machine using Liu Kang. It took about 17 bucks in quarters but I did it. Theres another strategy against Shao Kahn where you do jumping kicks over and over. Then kick as you jump towards him. Eventually he will slip up and taunt or something and youll have an opening. If youre fast enough you can hit him with an uppervut when he taunts. You can also duck block under his charge and spear and counter it.

There was an arcade on the second floor and I would go play in the arcade while my parents would go in the casino. They had Mortal Kombat II and it was easily the most popular game in the arcade. I somehow got lucky and found a magazine that had ALL the moves in it. The very first fatality I did was Shang Tsung's body explosion where he travels into your ear and then makes you huge until you explode lol. Every single kids jaw was literally on the floor when I did that lol. Oh, and the creators of the game were smart for making the AI so difficult because they got all your quarters from you haha!

I had seen the Simpsons, Street Fighter, but MK1 was the new kid on the block for sure. One year later, after getting to rent it for SNES often, there was another trip to our local arcade. I walk up to where the MK1 machine usually was and out of my left peripherals I notice MKII. So I investigate further and then it hit me, THIS IS NEW! I quickly dispensed a quarter and everything is mind blowing and hard to take in. But I continue with utter amazement and excitement. First character I picked was this cool looking dude with a hat. "KUNG LAO" it says when I press the select button and I'm like "oooo hoo hoo" like SpongeBob with the magic conch. Hearing Shao Kahn's voice was scary lol. I knew then this game wasn't f'ing around.

The thing that made this game playable for me was learning combos. You can delay hitting punch or kick while jumping which tricks the CPU. You can also jump over and kick or punch them on the backside of a block. These open the opponent up for a quick second and maybe third strike. In MK2, a 4 or 5 hit combo is reserved for a master.
