Chrisman discusses meat pigeons, also known as utility pigeons (when they're young they're called squabs). She shows footage of her own meat pigeons raising squabs, discusses the history of pigeon meat as the everyday poultry of choice, talks about the nutritional value of squab vs. chicken meat, and explains the etymology of the words "pigeon" and "dove". The end of the video includes a brief walk-through of the Des Moines pigeon show to see the fancy (non-meat) breeds on display: homers, frillbacks, Zitterhalls, and Jacobins.
Thank you for making this. I raise rabbits, and chickens already, but my younger two kids really want to do pigeons in 4-H next year. My daughter currently has a goat for 4-H, but we're trying to meet our kids' interests fed, while giving them strong, functional skills. This was a very informative video, and I appreciate the additional knowledge.
I'm glad you liked it! 🙂 If you can make it to a pigeon show, they're a great way to see a variety of different breeds in person, and sometimes to get a good deal on birds. Here's the national calendar for 2025: www.npausa.com/show_calendar/show_calendar_2025.html Also, if you're anywhere near Oklahoma City, the American Pigeon Museum is there (I haven't been there yet myself, but it's on my bucket list. 😀 Here's their website: www.theamericanpigeonmuseum.org/ Cheers!
Thank you for the video .I was searching for the Swiss MONDAINE pigeons ,but was not able to find any .It’s nice to see that they are still exist .Thank you .
They're some of the white ones in our dovecote. They look so much like our white Giant Runts, to be honest even I can't tell them apart. We got our original breeding pair of Swiss Mondaines for $10 each at the Des Moines Pigeon Show a few years ago. Sometimes you can get good deals like that at the shows as they're wrapping up.
Will you have any of the Swiss Mondain pigeons for sale ?
@@grigoriymazur6929 No, sorry. But check the pigeon show in December: there are always lots of breeders there selling lots of different birds. Good luck!
A great overview of a delightful bird. I kept pigeons for a short while in my late Middle, and early Highschool years. Mine were pretty much mongrels, but had some Tumbler genetics. I loved to watch them fly and suddenly tuck and roll.
I always enjoy your insights into daily life.
Happy Iowa Day from Yorkshire and thankyou for a lovely short but informative video.
Great video.
I love your videos, Sarah!
Those make me want a pigeon now.
You are so pretty!!!!!!! ✨✨✨ And thanks for the Pidgeon Facts
I realy love birds!
Informative.....are they to become dinner?
They do on a regular basis. I was a vegetarian for 29 years, but after a long, drawn-out process of nutritional deficiencies I woke up one morning unable to move my left leg. (Couldn't even wiggle my toes: the whole leg was just completely unresponsive, no matter how hard I tried to make it work.) I did some soul searching and decided that if I valued all life, then that had to include my own life as well. As a result I started eating meat again, but it was important to me that I be willing to involve myself in the whole process sometimes. Raising my own meat birds is my way of showing respect for the animals that give me life.
Thank you for answering me Sarah. I can see how much you love and respect animals, I also appreciate your story. Thanks for taking the time to reply!
Looks tasty
🥰🥰🥰
Where can I buy utility pigeons from. I don’t see any available in my area.
The best and cheapest birds will be at a pigeon show. Most states have them annually - here's the 2025 calendar: www.npausa.com/show_calendar/show_calendar_2025.html You can also contact the National Pigeon Association: www.npausa.com/customer_service/customer_service.html They're wonderful about helping people get into pigeon raising and they might be able to give you info about a breeder in your area. You can also try contacting the poultry division of your state fair: I got my first look at meat pigeons at the Iowa state fair and I was immediately hooked. :) Failing all else, Stromberg's Hatchery sells utility pigeons through the mail, but the cost of shipping adult birds can be very steep so I'd recommend the other options first. www.strombergschickens.com/live-birds-eggs/pigeons-and-doves/pigeons/utility-pigeons/ Good luck! Utility pigeons are great birds and I'd love to see more people raising them.
